The Student Debt Problem (Infographic)
Is a college education important and essential these days? Experts are divided. Since today’s college graduate faces one of the highest unemployment rates in history and will have a large student debt to repay, some experts say why bother with even getting a degree. Others say a college education is still extremely important and worth the hardship of graduating under a heap of student debt.
Most young people still believe that getting a college education is important and even more important than it was when their parents were growing up. However, most students also realize that it is difficult to afford an education.
The average college graduate in 2011 faced $22,900 in student loan debt. The monthly payment on such a debt is $263, assuming the current federal loan interest rate of 6.8%. Without a job, those monthly payments can be difficult or impossible to make and many default on their student loans.
Should the government do more to help students?
